My Favorite Movies

Here are some of my favorite popular movies that are much popular than the ones after this section. Right after this section, you can find a list of lesser known movies from different countries.

I simply talk about how these movies affected me or my favorite lines or scenes from the movies.

Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the Sea

This is not an easy movie to watch. In fact, it is probably one of the most heartbreaking movies I have ever seen. But I had to include it here because there is something about it that feels painfully real. A lot of movies about tragedy eventually give you some kind of redemption. The character [...]

La La Land

La La Land

I feel like La La Land is one of those movies people either passionately love or completely hate. And I can proudly say that I am very much on the side of loving it. I honestly don't know how many times I have listened to this soundtrack. I couldn't tell you how many mornings I [...]

Crazy Stupid Love

Crazy Stupid Love

There are some movies you can analyze endlessly, but Crazy, Stupid, Love is one of those films I don't really feel the need to analyze that much. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. For me, it is simply pure comfort. I can watch it again and again, know exactly what is going [...]

Dogville

Dogville

I am not even completely sure under which category I should put this movie. Lars von Trier is Danish, the story takes place in America, everyone speaks English... So I will not place it under a spesific category. Also, I had actually done a whole presentation on my media class during my Bachelors on Dogville, [...]

The Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects

There are movies with surprise endings, and then there is The Usual Suspects. This is one of those movies where the ending makes you immediately rethink everything you have just watched. The coffee mug falls, Kujan starts looking around the office, and suddenly all those random names and details Verbal has been telling him begin [...]

True Romance

True Romance

It has been many years since I actually sat down and watched True Romance, but somehow it is still one of the most unique movies I remember watching. Calling it a romance movie feels almost funny because there is so much happening around the romance. Drugs, gangsters, guns, murder, people getting beaten half to death... [...]

Amadeus

Amadeus

I do not remember every single detail of Amadeus, but if there is one thing permanently burned into my brain, it is that laugh. That absurd, high-pitched, almost ridiculous laugh coming from one of the greatest musical geniuses in history. And somehow it fits him perfectly. What stayed with me even more than Mozart himself, [...]

Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society

I know Dead Poets Society has become one of those movies that people sometimes make fun of for being overly sentimental or perhaps a little too fond of its own message. Well, this is social media. Apparently nothing is allowed to remain beloved for too long. 🙂 I would not say that I adore every [...]

Best of Danish Cinema

I have been watching various Danish movies since my high school years (that sounded like I am old :/ ), and I really do not know how to perfectly describe them. They just have their own unique feeling that makes them so different from everything else. They somehow always manage to either completely warm my heart, or in other cases, make me question all societal norms and push human relationships to their absolute limits.

Flickering Lights

Flickering Lights

I have a hard time finding the exact words for what makes Danish cinema feel so special to me. But if I had to choose one movie as the best example of that strange, heartwarming feeling, it would probably be Flickering Lights. The plot sounds ridiculous enough on its own. Four small-time gangsters steal a [...]

The Last Viking

The Last Viking

The premise of The Last Viking already sounds ridiculous enough: Anker gets out of prison after fifteen years and wants to recover the money from the robbery that sent him there. The only person who knows where it was buried is his brother Manfred. The problem is that Manfred no longer wants to be Manfred. [...]

After the Wedding

To this day, I still have not watched the American remake of After the Wedding. I have only seen the trailer, and honestly, it already felt like a very different movie to me. So everything here is about Susanne Bier's original Danish version. This is also another Susanne Bier movie, after In a Better World, [...]

The Green Butchers

The Green Butchers

Just imagine buying some sausage from the local butcher and thinking it is probably the best meat ever made. (It might also help that the butcher happens to look like Mads Mikkelsen.) Then it turns out that the sausage is made of human flesh because someone accidentally died in the freezer. I mean, a good [...]

Another Round - Druk

Another Round – Druk

First of all, I would like to put another check on my Mads Mikkelsen bingo card. At this point I am seriously starting to wonder: am I only watching Danish movies with Mads Mikkelsen in them, or is Mads Mikkelsen simply in every Danish movie? Anyway. The whole idea of Another Round starts with a [...]

Open Hearts – Elsker dig for evigt

I honestly don't think I even need to review this movie. I can just tell you the plot and leave. Cecilie and Joachim are a young couple, happily engaged and about to get married. Then Joachim gets hit by a car. And not just slightly hit by a car. He survives, but is left paralyzed [...]

In a Better World

In a Better World

This was a very touching movie for me, especially because of the way it deals with violence and what being a "strong man" actually means. Anton is probably the strongest person in the movie, at least in the way I see him. He is a doctor who regularly leaves his family in Denmark to work [...]

Adam's Apple

Adam’s Apple

I think Adam's Apples might actually have been the first Danish movie I ever watched. And honestly, it probably played a role in why I became so interested in Danish cinema afterwards. I knew almost nothing about it at the time, and then I watched this incredibly dark, ridiculous, but somehow also very heartwarming movie [...]

Georgian Cinema

Honestly I would not say that the reason I put Georgian movies here is because of how amazing they are. I mean, surely they are remarkable and some movies are some of my all time facorites but the main reason why I love Georgian cinema so much is my personal connection to Georgia and Georgian culture.  Also cinema is a great way to get to know a culture, in that way these movies are great for people who are interested in Georgia.

Tangerines

Tangerines

This was honestly a tough movie for me to watch. Not in the sense that it was difficult to follow or exhausting. Quite the opposite actually. There is something incredibly calm about Tangerines. The camera, the landscape, the music, the small number of characters... nothing is constantly fighting for attention. And yet, what is happening [...]

Iranian Cinema

There is something about Iranian cinema that feels very special to me. The way these movies can be so simple and naive, but still make me think, cry, or sometimes just stare at the screen without really understanding what I am feeling at that moment.

Abbas Kiarostami, Majid Majidi and many more… I am still in the process of discovering this beautiful cinema tradition, but it already feels like its own kind of magic.

And Life Goes On

And Life Goes On

After Where Is the Friend's House?, Kiarostami returned to the same region for And Life Goes On, but under very different circumstances. In June 1990, northern Iran was struck by the devastating Manjil-Rudbar earthquake. It had a magnitude of around 7.3 to 7.4, destroyed hundreds of villages and left tens of thousands of people dead [...]

Song of Sparrows

Song of Sparrows

Majid Majidi has this way of showing very ordinary lives with such a simple and almost naive perspective, without making them feel unimportant. Even the smallest things somehow become meaningful. And cinematically, I just love looking at this movie. The landscapes, the colors, the quiet moments... everything feels very gentle. Also, I have to admit [...]

Taste of Cherry

Kiarostami does what he does best again here. Beautiful landscape shots, long and interesting conversations, and a story that is extremely simple on the surface but somehow opens up into something much bigger. The whole plot can almost be explained in one sentence. Mr. Badii drives around the outskirts of Tehran looking for someone who [...]

Where Is the Friend’s House?

Once again, Kiarostami takes an incredibly simple story and somehow makes an entire movie out of it. A schoolboy, Ahmad, accidentally takes his classmate's notebook home with him. This normally would not sound like a particularly serious problem, but his teacher has already warned the boy that he will be punished if he fails to [...]

Picks from Different Countries

Looking at the Oscar nominations, my favorite category has always been International Feature Film. For me, it has been a really nice way to discover good, carefully selected movies from different parts of the world.

Through this little habit, I have already gotten to know quite a few different cinema traditions, and I hope to continue doing that all my life. I really like the idea of learning about different cultures through their movies and seeing how people from completely different places tell their stories.

The Worst Person in the World

The Worst Person in the World

I think almost everyone can probably find at least a small piece of themselves in The Worst Person in the World. Julie spends much of the movie trying to figure out who she actually wants to be. She changes direction, questions her relationships, makes decisions, regrets some of them, and then questions herself again. The [...]

Corpus Christi

For some reason, I feel like Corpus Christi might be a good movie for people who watched Fleabag and were left wanting more priests, complicated relationships with religion, and people who are probably not making the best decisions of their lives. 🙂 Although, to be fair, I watched Corpus Christi before I ever watched Fleabag.
